The Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, is a leading Bulgarian institution realizing fundamental and applied scientific researches in the field of ethnology, folklore studies, cultural and social anthropology, ethnomusicology, ethnochoreology, art studies and museology. The Institute is engaged in consulting and expert activities in those scientific fields.

The history of the Ethnographic Institute with Museum dates back to the end of the 19th century when the modern Bulgarian state was established. In 1892 in Sofia was realized the idea of founding a National Museum, consisting of three sections: ethnographic, numismatic and ancient. In 1906, the ethnographic section became the basis of the first ethnographic museum in Bulgaria – the National Ethnographic Museum. In 1947 at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences the Institute of Ethnography was established, which was united with the National Ethnographic Museum in 1949. That was the beginning of the Ethnographic Institute with Museum at BAS. In 1973, after it separated from the EIM, the independent Institute of Folklore was established. In 2010, both institutes were again united in the present Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
